PayFast vs. Yoco vs. Ozow: Which Payment Gateway Is Right for Your Online Store?

12 August 2026 · 10 min read

This is one of the first real decisions in launching a South African online store, and it’s worth getting right, because switching gateways later means re-testing your entire checkout. Here’s how the three most common options actually differ. Transaction fees change over time for all three, so treat any percentage you see quoted anywhere, including here, as something to confirm directly with the provider before you commit, not as a fixed fact.

PayFast

The broadest, most established option for general South African e-commerce. Supports card payments, instant EFT, and several other local methods through a single integration. There’s a mature WooCommerce plugin (and equivalents for other platforms), so setup is generally straightforward for a standard store. It’s the default recommendation when a store needs to accept "everything" without picking multiple gateways.

Yoco

Yoco started as in-person card machines and expanded into online payments, which makes it a natural fit if you already use a Yoco card machine in a physical shop and want unified reporting across in-person and online sales. Onboarding is built for small businesses and solo operators specifically, quick signup, straightforward dashboard. Best fit: a business with a retail or in-person presence adding an online store, not the other way around.

Ozow

Ozow is instant-EFT focused: customers pay directly from their own online banking app, no card details entered anywhere. That matters in a market where a meaningful share of consumers have a bank account and banking app but not a credit card, or simply prefer not to enter card details on unfamiliar sites. It also tends to appeal to businesses wanting to avoid card-network fees specifically, since it routes around cards entirely. The tradeoff: customers without online banking set up, or those who strongly prefer card payments, may find it less convenient.

How to actually choose

  • Selling to a broad general audience, want maximum payment method coverage: PayFast.
  • Already running a physical shop with a Yoco card machine: Yoco, for unified reporting.
  • Audience skews toward bank-app users, or you want to minimise card fees specifically: Ozow, often alongside a card option rather than instead of one.
  • Not sure, or want more than one: most stores can integrate more than one gateway. The right combination depends on your actual customer base, not a generic recommendation.

What matters beyond the fee percentage

  • Settlement speed: how quickly funds actually land in your bank account.
  • Integration complexity: is there a maintained plugin for your platform, or does it need custom integration work.
  • Support: how the gateway handles a disputed transaction or a failed payment when it happens to a real customer.
  • Reporting: whether the dashboard gives you what your bookkeeping actually needs, or you’re exporting CSVs and reconciling by hand.

This is exactly the kind of decision that gets built into the E-Commerce Launch process rather than left for you to research alone, matched to your actual customers, not a generic default.
